Why should you have your chimney swept?

Neglecting your chimney could put your life and property at risk...

On a cold winter’s night, it’s lovely curling up on the sofa appreciating a roaring fire that eventually simmers down until the last little orange flicker disappears. When it’s time for bed you go upstairs, read a few chapters of your book, curl up in a ball and fall fast asleep (in an ideal world).

Whilst you are sleeping, your beautiful smoke-free, efficiently burning stove (so long as it’s maintained well) cools down but leaves a small amount of creosote and soot around the inside of the chimney. Night after night you enjoy the fire that has become the heart of your home.

Spring arrives, days get warmer and the fire gets lit now and then. The flowers are blooming birds are singing and each day is glorious sunshine until October (we can only hope). Spiders will spin their webs, birds may build a nest and environmental debris could build up in your chimney.

If you don’t maintain your chimney you are putting your life and property at risk. It’s like running a car, your chimney needs to have a degree of regular servicing. Otherwise, you could find yourself in an unfortunate situation.

There are thousands of chimney fires every year in the UK, don’t be one of the statistics.

A good chimney is essential to the continuing efficient and safe operation of all solid fuel-burning heating and cooking appliances. HETAS recommends that chimney sweeping is best carried out by a HETAS Approved Chimney Sweep at least once a year, depending upon the appliance and fuel being used.
