Chimney Sweeping in the Milton Keynes area and beyond

Keeping your chimney clean is an important part of maintaining a chimney, as well as a log burner or fireplace, and here at Bailey Stoves MK Ltd, we offer a friendly and professional chimney sweeping service.

The importance of a clean chimney

If you’re planning to call out a chimney sweep, then your main concern is probably safety.

According to recent statistics, chimney fires account for up to 7,000 fires in the UK every year — and many of those incidents might have been prevented with a quick visit from a chimney sweep.

In addition, a clean chimney allows the gases and particles from a fire to escape your home quickly, ensuring a better indoor environment.

But safety isn’t the only benefit of getting your chimney cleaned regularly. It’s also important to remember that a clean chimney allows a fire to burn more efficiently, saving you money on fuel and helping to reduce your carbon footprint.

In addition, good chimney maintenance, including regular sweeping, is often a stipulation of stove warranties, and it may also be required by your home insurance — check with your provider for more information.

How often should you call out a chimney sweep?

As a minimum, you should have your chimney cleaned at least once a year. If the building has a thatched roof, your insurance company may require a chimney sweep visit more often.

Regardless of roof construction, depending on how often you use your fire, as well as the fuel type and appliance, your chimney may need to be swept up to four times a year — three times in the burning season and once in the summer.

What happens when a chimney sweep visits?

The primary job of a chimney sweep is to clear out excess soot, as well as any other debris and blockages, that may be in the chimney. This is done using the traditional brushes, but we also have modern technology to help us out — such as rotary power brushes.

The chimney sweep will place a protective cloth over the area around the fire to help keep the floor clean. They will also install a temporary seal inside the chimney to prevent debris from falling into the room. Once the chimney sweeping is finished, the sweep will thoroughly clean up the area, including hoovering the floor. So all that’s left when they leave is the faint smell of soot.

Before the sweep arrives, please ensure your chimney and log burner are cold. If the sweep is unable to work on the appliance due to the heat, you will still be charged for the call-out, but the chimney will not be cleaned.

How much does chimney sweeping cost?

Protect your family and your home with regular chimney sweeping. Our HETAS-registered chimney sweeps provide a friendly and professional service using a combination of traditional tools and modern technology.

If you’re curious about how much chimney sweeping costs, we’ve provided a price guide below. These numbers should be fairly accurate but please note that prices may vary depending on the circumstances.
Birds' nests in chimneys
It’s not uncommon for a chimney sweep to find a birds nest — or several! — in a chimney. These are of particular concern, as they can cause blockages, which may not be detected until you decide to light a fire. This is why it’s especially important to call out a chimney sweep if you haven’t used your fire in some time.

As with any chimney blockage, a chimney sweep should be able to clear away birds nests. However, we also recommend you consider having a bird guard installed to prevent the problem — this is available as part of our chimney repairs service.
